The new RØDE Lavalier has a full bodied low end and a natural high end response. This means you can do a better match with a boom mic in post. The sound produced is lovely, and matches my other quality lavs well. While testing, myself and another sound recordist were hard put to hear any difference with my standard units retailing at twice the price of the RØDE!
I also love the ability to interchange the capsule/lead/ adaptor with the MiCon system. That means greater flexibility.
So, how does the RØDE lavalier compare to some of the tried and true lavs on the market? You would really need "golden ears" to hear the nuances. We've had professionals in blind tests pick the RØDE lav against mics costing much more.
The first thing I noticed was the lightness and thinness of this mic. Despite being so small, the Kevlar material is very, very strong. The included waterproof case is a bonus! With everything I record, the ability to use short and long extension cables is crucial.
When we record a small car (in motion) at 12 feet plus in length or a large battle tank (in motion) at over 32 feet long , we can place the lavaliers from the engine and exhaust areas to where I sit inside the vehicle using multiple RØDE extension cables. Unlike standard thick XLR cables, I can run these thin RØDE extensions without having to use so much gaffers tape to secure them on fast moving vehicles. The small screw-on couplers to secure cables together works quite well so the idea of lightness and thinness is still maintained.
Yes, many manufacturers of portable recording devices only state that their microphone inputs have plug-in power and do not give any more technical information. The RØDE Lavalier, Headset and Pinmic are compatible with this type of connection. Our microphones require at least 1V of power. Standard 'plug-in power' will be able to supply this.
